New Normal

It’s always new,
regenerating itself each day,
reforming around 
yesterday’s foibles and fortes

incorporating them 
into the warp and weave 
of our essence,
changing the rules we’ve relied on.

Sometimes a startling stroke of 
morality makes it better,
more often a disorienting disaster
resets our foundation,

sinking it into places 
we once feared,
but will come to accept 
as the way things are.

Trump and his courtiers,
Putin and his oligarchs,
Netanyahu and his Zionists
make the unacceptable the new normal. 

Depravity has always drawn us.
We applaud virtue and the virtuous,
but they seldom change it for long.
It’s the dark side that we voyeurs feast on.
